The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in eleven different caves by the northwest coast of the Dead Sea. The discovery of them lasted between 1947 & 1956, and with each new cave came another one to be found. Similar to when they discovered the “Valley of the Kings” in Egypt.
It was in 1952 that they discovered Cave number 4 with nearly 15,000 fragments and more than 500 manuscripts. Because of the amount, they were able to split the group into two categories: Biblical and Non-Biblical. The scrolls are not the beginning of a history, but as a culmination. Before this discovery, the earliest tests of the Hebrew Bible were from around 1,000 years after these scrolls were written.
Amazing Facts:
1) Prophecies by Ezekial, Jeremiah, and Daniel not found in the Bible were written in the Scrolls
3) The last words of Joseph, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, and Amram (father of Moses) are written in the Scrolls
4) The Isaiah Scroll, found relatively intact, is 1,000 years older than any previously known copy of Isaiah. Another side fact, is that the scrolls are the oldest group of Old Testament manuscripts ever found.
The exhibit at the Discover Time Square/ New York Times building also includes many artifacts from the Holy Land. Such as a 3 Ton stone from the Western Wall, which is one of the most famous sites in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple’s courtyard.
While some of the artifacts have been on display before, and for some this is the first time they are seeing the light of day, Google is digitizing all of them and putting them on the internet. One of the other amazing things about the exhibit in Time Square, is that the scrolls are strategically placed at the end of the show. The reason is to show you about the scrolls’ past, and to show that they are not just a part of religious history, but also of national history.
